Knowing the difference between contractors

homeconstructionIn today’s economy many builders are now getting into home remodeling which on the surface seems like a good ides for the homeowner but in fact can lead to many headaches. While new construction and remodeling have some things in common, they are actually quite different. Homebuilders are essentially a contractor that works with volume and may build 3 or 4 houses at a time in an assembly line fashion. They start with raw land and are able to build and control all aspects of the project by hiring specific construction crews to perform specific trades. There are usually very little unknown issues through out the course of the project.

Remodeling contractors usually work on a house where people are living and they need to concern themselves with the safety and well-being of the homeowner’s family, pets, and property. A good home improvement contractor needs to know about any possibility hazardous materials in the house such as lead paint, asbestos, or mold and how to properly handle them safely.

There are many companies out there that were only specializing in one type of construction area only a year or two ago and now have expanded into entire home remodels. These companies do not have the experience, knowledge or correct know how to execute a quality remodel, for them it is about surviving as a company. A person who is starting a remodel project should be aware of companies that claim to do quality remodel projects when last year they were only installers on one type of product.

homeremodelA handyman person who now claims to be able to do construction, tile, plumbing, electrical, concrete is not the person you want doing a major renovation. Most people that advertise as a handyman are un-licensed and improperly insured. These people probably worked with a lead carpenter or on a construction crew and decided that they could do this on their own and make all the money. We have seen many projects left unfinished and done incorrectly due to handyman claiming to be capable of completing the job. It is very common to see projects done structurally incorrect and thereby having to completely start over. What this means for the customer is they are hiring someone without a license, experience and credentials to do a complete job and therefore have no protection to recover costs from them in case something goes wrong.
